He was born in Norfolk, Virginia and attended Columbia University before he would embark on his Hollywood career. Among his other notable films are "It Came from Beneath the Sea" (1955), "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" (1956), "Hellcats of the Navy" (1957), "Battle of the Coral Sea" (1959), "Mysterious Island" (1961), "Half a Sixpence" (1967) and "The Valley of Gwangi" (1969).
