Henry Bergh
Birth: Aug. 29, 1811
Death: Mar. 12, 1888

Social Reformer, US Diplomat. He was a philanthropist and diplomat who founded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the co-founder of the Child Protective Society in the United States. He championed the rights of animals and children and was known for beating the owners of horse-carts with the very whips they used to beat their horses. Prior to creating these organizations, he was Abraham Lincoln's ambassador to Russia. He is buried in one of the three pyramid monuments in Green-Wood Cemetery.
