Alvin Marion Burley, 85, died Dec. 5, 2000, at Infinia Healthcare of Smith Center. He was born Sept. 25, 1915, in Osceola, Neb., the son of Ivan Walter and Ester Elnora Johnson Burley.
..He was a Navy veteran in World War II, serving as a gunner aboard the flagship USS Rooks, DD 804, and received an honorable discharge in 1945. He was a member of American Legion Post 220, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and United Methodist Church, all of Smith Center.
..Alvin has been a Smith Center resident since 1954, moving from McCool Junction, Neb. He and wife Ilene owned and operated a nursing home and then the Ingleboro restaurant in Smith Center.
..On Aug. 19, 1936, Alvin maried Ilene Mahin in Brewster. She died on Sept. 22, 1997.
..He also was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mildred Gilette.
..Survivors are a son, John M. Burley of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sister, Pat Miller of Lincoln, Neb.; and two grandchildren, John Christian and Erin Elizabeth Burley of Scottsdale.
..The funeral was Dec. 8th at the United Methodist Church, Smith Center, with Rev. Sara Dillinger officiating. Kathy McCary was the musician.
..Casket bearers were Jake Knight, Mike Johnson, Mike Miller, and Allan McNerney. Burial was at the Cedar Cemetery, Cedar.
