MRS. UNITY FOYE, EARLY PIONEER PASSES AWAY
Bought Property In Fresno City at First Lot Sale

Mrs. Unity A. Foye, who bought property in Fresno at the first town lot sale, and had lived for over a dozen years at Academy before that time, died this morning at the age of 88.

Mrs. Foye lived in Fresno through all its early history, and was at the time of her death one of the few remaining pioneers of early days. She came here 62 years ago. She was a sister of the late Mrs. Mary J. Blasingame, another
pioneer woman.

The death of Mrs. Foye did not come as a surprise as she had been an invalid for a long time. She was born in Kentucky, October 11, 1826.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Stephen and Bean Chapel. Interment will be made at Mountain View Cemetery. Rev. C.L. Beal of the North Side Christian Church will officiate.

Mrs. Foye was twice married. She first married Thomas J. Cranmer, in Missouri, and came with him to Fresno. After his death, she married John Foye in 1890. The second husband died in 1900.

The surviving relatives are two sons and two daughters. They are W.S. Cranmer, at whose home at 1434 N Street Mrs. Foye died; George J. Cranmer of Bard, Imperial County; Mrs. J.N. Walker of Fresno and Mrs. M.C. Duncan of Hanford.

PIONEER WOMAN IS CALLED BY DEATH
Mrs. Unity Foye Succumbs to Long Illness At Home of Son

Mrs. Unity Foye, one of the oldest pioneers in the San Joaquin Valley, died yesterday at the home of her son, W.S. Cranmer, 1434 N Street, at the age of 88 years. Mrs. Foye had been in ill health for some time and for the past few
years had been an invalid. Since becoming helpless she has been at the home of her son. Mrs. Foye had been a resident of California for 62 years and had resided in this county for the last 45 years. Before Fresno was on the map Mrs.
Foye moved to Academy and made her home there with her husband.

Mrs. Foye was born in Kentucky and when a little girl went with her parents to Missouri. When she reached womanhood she went to Texas, then known as the Republic of Texas and was married to Thomas J. Cranmer in the year 1845. In
1852 she crossed the plains with her husband and came to California by way of Salt Lake City. They located in Calaveras County and followed mining.

In 1869 Cranmer and his wife moved to Fresno County and made their home at Academy. Fresno at that time only consisted of a few shacks. Fresno in 1872 was cut up
into town lots and Mrs. Cranmer bought two lots on K Street near Fresno for $62.50 apiece. The Cranmers then lived at Academy. Cranmer had no faith in Fresno but thought that Academy would be the town of the valley. He was opposed
to his wife buying the lots but she did so on her own initiative. The lots now are valued at $15,000 to $25,000 apiece. Cranmer died in 1876.

Mrs. Cranmer managed her little estate and purchased considerable property. During the boom of 1888 she lost much of her property but managed to retain the two lots on K Street. She lived there for many years in a little house until a store building was constructed. In 1892 Mrs. Cranmer married John Foye. He died ten years later. Mrs. Cranmer up to the time she was prevented by old age was a worker in the Baptist and Methodist church.

She is survived by four children. They are W.S. Cranmer, George J. Cranmer of Bard, Imperial County; Mrs. J.N. Walker of Fresno and Mrs. M.C. Duncan of Hanford.

She also leaves about fifty descendants, including grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Stephens & Bean's chapel. Rev. Charles Beal, pastor of the North Side Christian church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
