Joseph Andrew Buchanan 1887 – 1946, was born to William Allen Buchanan 1833 – 1904 and Elizabeth Jane Hawkins 1846 – 1926. Her siblings were: Lucinda Loport Buchanan 1874 – 1950, she married James Martin Synamon; James Allen Buchanan 1876 – 1940, he married Mattie Peavler; George Alexander Buchanan 1877 – 1936, he married Marthia "Mattie" Ellen Gibson; Mary Elizabeth Buchanan 1880 – 1954; Chester Venoy Buchanan 1881 – 1944, he married Viola Knox; Joseph Andrew Buchanan 1887 – 1946.
In the 1900 census Joe's father owned his farm, free of a mortgage, but he declared that he was not working. He declared that 18 year old Venoy and 12 year old Joseph was doing the farming.
On Mar. 17, 1904, was a sad day in the Buchanan family because Joe's father, Allen, passed away.
Mar. 5, 1909, Joe married Katherine Mustin. Over the next 20 years Kate gave birth to 11 children. They were: Mary Elizabeth Buchanan 1910; Catherine Buchanon 1912; Alice Buchanon 1914; Joseph Anthony Buchanan 1915; Gertrude Buchanon 1918; Charlie E Buchanan 1920; Johnie Buchanan 1922; William Buchanan 1924;Willy Buchanon 1925; Margaret Buchanan 1928 and Ella M Buchanan 1929.
At the date that the 1910 census was enumerated Joe and Kate didn't have any children yet, but his mother Elizabeth was living with them.
On June 15, 1917, Joseph Andrew Buchanan was called to register for the WW1 draft. He declared that he lived in Moorisburg, Tennessee. He had a wife and 4 children, he was a farmer employed by E.A. Galbraith. He was tall, stout, with blue eyes and brown hair.
By the 1930 census Joe had moved his family to Crab Orchard, Kentucky. He was living in a rented house, nine of the children were living at home. Joseph was making a living as a carpenter.
In 1940 the family had been living in a rented house on Allen School Road in Crab Orchard since before 1935, Joseph was farming 44 hours a week. The three boys were working about 10 to 15 hours as farm helpers a week. The family only completed about the 4th grade of elementary school.
Jan. 15, 1946 was a day of sadness. Joseph Andrew Buchanan had passed away. Kate gathered her family and friend around her as she bid her dearly beloved husband farewell, as he was buried at the Crab Orchard Cemetery.
