Hugh continued to live in the Chanute area until being drafted into the Army Air Corp. Hugh left home after graduation to serve his country. Towards the end of World War II, he was captured and held as a POW for a year. He was very proud to say he was a veteran.
In 1945, Hugh married his high school sweetheart, Mary Bullington, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 2007. From this union, three daughters were born.
In 1949, Hugh and Mary moved to Grand Junction, Colo. Hugh worked for a cabinet company and a furniture store before deciding to open his own furniture and antique store with Mary. Burton's Furniture and Antiques served the Grand Junction community for many years. Hugh loved golf and fly fishing in his spare time and in their younger years, he and Mary enjoyed remodeling the rental homes they owned.
Hugh leaves behind his daughters, Susan (Gary) Timm of Grand Junction, Colo.; Sally (John) Thompson of Denver, Colo., and Shirley (Joe) Burford of Bayard, Neb.; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A celebration of Hugh's life will be held Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at 1:00 p.m., Martin Mortuary Chapel at which time Hugh will receive full military honors. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be given to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado in Hugh's name.
