Gresham Cemetery is located in Kennesaw, Cobb County, Georgia. Had to do alot of hunting before I found this cemetery, as directions were not clear. There are two cemeteries by this name - the other a small black cemetery with no sign. It took finding some death certificate to find out I had found the wrong one. Finally.........after many attemps, someone I met knew about where this cemetery way and then I finally found it on a very hot day.
Rebecca's marker is old, but still in good condition. Two grandchildren of Rebecca's by her son John Seaborn Brantley's are buried beside her. Three of her sons died while serving in the Civil War. During the Civil War, her husband went to take care of one of the sick sons and to help the other soldiers in the same camp. He became ill with their disease and also died. She also lost her daughter during the Civil War years. So she lost four children and her husband within just a three year period. Two of her sons died in the Civil War in 1861, her husband in 1862, her daughter and another son in the Civil War in 1864. So very sad for this lady. Don't you know this was so very hard for her with all the loss.
This left her with a daughter Mary Anne Frances Brantley who married John Donald Benson and her only son left, John Seaborn Brantley who married Margaret Anne Elizabeth Benson. Margaret and John Donald were brother and sister and they married a brother and sister. All of their children were then double first cousins.
Rebecca was my GG-GrandAunt.
Rebecca remarried after 1862 to John Durham, who was born 10/17/1806. Very little is known about him, other than he was born in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He was first married to Sarah Sallie Griffith/Durham about 1833. They had eleven children.
Rebecca Tanner/Brantley and John Durham are shown as married and living together in both the 1870 and 1880 census. We have her death date, but not his. So he died sometime after 1880.
If you have information on either Rebecca, Dr. Brantley or John Durham, please contact me.
