Birth: 1863
Jefferson County
West Virginia, USA
Death: May 19, 1920
Jefferson County
West Virginia, USA

The following obit for John appeared in the May 25, 1920 Spirit of Jefferson:

The death of Mr. John C Burns, one of the leading farmers of the county and well known in business circles, occurred at his home, Flowing Spring, two miles northeast of Charles Town, at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning. His last illness began several months ago and while at times he seemed to get better, the improvement was more apparent then real, his decline being gradual until about two weeks before his death, when he became decidedly worse. The best medical skill both in the county and in Baltimore was sought in an effort to relieve him, but all was unavailing. To those who met him casually in the last month or two of his illnesses, he was cheerful and keenly interested in his business affairs.

Deceased was the son of the late John and Martha Burns, life-long residents of the county. The family home at the time of his birth over 56 years ago was in the western suburbs of Charles Town. His parents moved to Beverly, their farm three miles southwest of town when Jno. C. was a boy. There he grew up to manhood, learning the practical side of farm life that he utilized to marvelous advantage afterward in building up a landed estate of a thousand acres or more in this county and in Maryland.

Mr. Burns business activities were not confined to farming alone. For t he past twenty-five years he has been one of the most active men of affairs in Charles Town, his interests here, at first being confined to the coal business. His interests expanded to include the ice business, the handling of grain and finally, that of hardware. Ten or twelve years ago, the county drafted him for service on its court, and he filled the position of County Commissioner with credit for a number of years, retiring January 1, 1917. He brought to the conduct of county affairs the business acumen and insight that has brought him success in his personal business life. Even semi-public institutions claimed a part of his time. He served as director of the Bank of Charles Town for a number of years, and at the time of his death, he was a director also in the Jefferson Bank and Trust Company.

The surviving members of his family are his widow, who was Miss Yoe of Tennessee, before marriage, two sons, Harry and Louie, two daughters Fannie and Katherine, the former being a pupil in the Randolph-Macon College for W omen at Lynchburg, VA. Mr. Burns leaves also one brother, Mr. Marshall Burns, a farmer and three sisters, Mrs. Thomas Frasier, Mrs. Luther R Huyett and Miss Cora Burns, all resident of this county.

The funeral was held at Flowing Spring at 8 o'clock, Thursday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. Dr. G.G. Sydnor, of the Charles Town Presbyterian Church. The obsequies were concluded at the grave in Edge hill Cemetery, where many gathered to pay their last tribute of respect. Mssrs. Daniel Heflebower, Chas. H. Moore, Thos. J West, Nelson T Snyder, L.M. Porter and N.R. Roberts were the active pallbearers.
