July 19th-S G W Benjamin, Author, artist and diplomat died suddenly today at his home here in his 78th year. He was the First US Minister to Persia, receiving his appointment in 1883 and he drew up the code used in diplomatic procedure between the two countries.

Samuel Green Wheeler Benjamin was born Argos Greece in 1837 and was the son of American Missionary, The Rev. Nathan Benjamin and Mary Gladding Wheeler Benjamin. His grandfathers were Capt Nathan Benjamin and Capt Charles Seymour who served with distinction in the Revolution.
At the age of 11 he had read both the Iliad and the Aeneid. He studied at home under the direction of his father and then attended the English School at Smyrna.
Mr Benjamin was sent to this country as soon as he was old enough and entered William College from which he graduated in 1859 with a degree of A B.
In 1883 he was appointed the First United States Minister to Persia and served until 1886.
His paintings and books are well known. He was formerly art editor of the American Department of the Magazine of Art and was a marine painter and an illustrator. During the Crimean War he went to the front and for the London Illustrated News, and his illustration of that conflict attracted much attention at that time.
Mr Benjamin was Vice President of the Society of American Authors, a Member of the Sons of the Revolution, a Member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Member of Boston Art Club, The American Free Art Society, The American Forestry Association, The Society of Colonial Wars and the Navy League of the United States.
Among his literary works are Constantinople, Isle of Pearls and Other Poems, Ode on the Death of Abraham Lincoln, The Turk and the Greek, Tom Roper and Yarn for Boys, Persia and the Persians, The story of Persia.
