July 27, 1944 The War Department has sent notification that Private First class Robert Paul Piper was killed in action in France on June 6. He was previously reported missing in action
He was a member of a replacement battalion and had been stationed in England.
Paul was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Orus W. Piper, of Sumner. He was born in Claremont and attended school in Sumner before entering the armed service in April 1943.
Surviving are four brothers, Cecil and Burnis Piper, of Sumner: Raymond Piper, of Olney: Cpl. Carroll Piper, of the Army, and five sisters, Mrs. Elmer Bealer, Mrs. Omer Shick, Mrs. Chester Crawford, and Miss Verna Piper, of Sumner, and Mrs. John Highsmith, of Columbia, N.C.
