Obituary from The Independent Record:
Margaret Evelyn (Samson) Anderson, 86, former First Lady of Montana, died March 6, 2001, surrounded by family in the comfort of her home. Evelyn, the only child of Walter and Margaret Samson, was born Aug. 27, 1914, in the home of her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. S.C. Newell in Lewistown. For three years, her family homesteaded on Sun Prairie south of Malta, and when she was five, they relocated to Helena and started a small neighborhood grocery.
After graduating from Helena High in 1932, "Sammy" attended the University in Missoula. Yearning to see the world, she moved to Los Angeles where she graduated from Mme. Charrette's design school. Evelyn returned to Helena and in 1941, married her high school sweetheart, Forrest Anderson.
While Forrest moved through his political career as legislator, Lewis and Clark County Attorney, Supreme Court Justice, Attorney General, and finally Governor of Montana, Evelyn remained a strong and important wife, mother and citizen. She will be remembered for establishing the state flower garden in front of the State Capitol. She will also be long remembered as a loving, compassionate mother, grandmother and friend to many.
Evelyn enjoyed traveling, playing bridge with her many friends, and supporting local benefits. She belonged to Eastern Star, Montana Original Governor's Mansion Board and Pioneer Cabin Board, Westerner's Club and other charitable organizations.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Arlee Anderson of Great Falls; son, Newell and wife, Bonnie; grandchildren, Forrest Anderson and Kimberly Anderson of Helena, Paris Templin, of Redwood City, Calif., Margaret Nerison of Poulsbo, Wash., Forrest Templin of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. Memorials are suggested to your favorite charity.
