Stanley Unwin
Birth: Jun. 7, 1911
Death: Jan. 12, 2002

Entertainer, Writer. Born in Pretoria, South Africa to British parents, he was raised in England from age three. In 1940 he joined the BBC as an electrician and inadvertantly made his radio debut while performing a transmitter test, using the name "Codlington Corthusite". The producers of the "Mirror of the Month" show found it amusing enough to broadcast. Soon afterwards Unwin received a letter of praise from performer Joyce Grenfell, which encouraged him to go into show business. His breakthrough came when he appeared on the show "The Sic of Life" with Ted Ray, June Whitfield and Kenneth Connor. He is most famous for inventing his own language, "Unwinese", a mangled form of English that could be both disorientating and hilarious. He recorded several albums, including "Rotatey Diskers with Unwin" (1960) and "Rock-a-bye Babel and two Fairy Tales" (1966). In 1966 he narrated "Happiness Stan" on the Small Faces album "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake". He also appeared in several movies, including "Fun at Fanny's" (1956), "Carry on Regardless" (1961) and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968). In later life he a made a number of television commercials and collaborated with British dance music act Wubble-U on their single "Petal". In 1998 he made an appearance on Aardman Animation's television show "Rex the Runt". Unwin's work is said to have influenced John Lennon's books "In his Own Write" (1964) and "A Spaniard in the Works" (1965). He was not related to literary figure Stanley Unwin, the publisher of Tolkien. (bio by: js)
