| Birth: | Jul. 22, 1822 | | Death: | Mar. 18, 1903 |  Civil War Union Major General. He graduated at from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1841, and served gallantry in the Mexican War as Aide-de-camp to General Winfield Scott until he resigned as a Captain in 1854. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he volunteered for the New York National Guard and was commissioned Brigadier General in command of the 7th New York Regiment in 1861. Promoted Major General in 1862, he actively engaged in operations against the Confederates in the Missouri, Mississippi and Tennessee campaigns until compelled to resign due to illness in 1863. He later was hydrographic engineer, superintendent of the Department of Docks, New York City, until 1875 and subsequently retired owing to ill health.
