Nicholas Dimedoff (as the name was spelled in the local papers) was a Russian seaman from the russian ship Almaz. The Russian fleet was visiting Annapolis in early 1864. Nicholas was shot in a barroom brawl in the city by Mr. William T. League.
Demidoff had been assigned to the flagship Almaz, the same ship on which the eighteen year-old recent graduate of the Russian naval academy, Rimskii-Korsakov, sailed (composer).
