Early Texas Settler. Early in his life, he was active in several Texas military expeditions against Spain and Mexico, and served as a lieutenant at the Battle of Anahauc. After the Texas revolution broke out, Hall was appointed adjutant general of Texas in 1836 and later acted as secretary of war of the Republic of Texas. Hall held the rank of colonel and commanded the post at Velasco until May 26, after Texas' independence had been won at San Jacinto. He was among the charter members of the first Masonic lodge in Texas. Hall County, Texas, which was created in 1876 and organized in 1890, was named in his honor.
