Fitz John Porter
Birth: Aug. 31, 1822
Portsmouth
Rockingham County
New Hampshire, USA
Death: May 21, 1901
Morristown
Morris County
New Jersey, USA

Civil War Union Major General. Cousin of Admirals David D. Porter Jr. and David G. Farragut. General Porter was a casualty of the politics that ruled the Army of the Potomac during its first few years. He had commanded the V Corps with brilliance and skill during the Seven Day's Battles, and commanded the Corps at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, where he was unable to carry out impossible orders from his commander, Maj. Gen. John Pope. Although the responsibility of the subsequent rout of the Federal troops at the battle rested squarely on Pope's shoulders, he laid heavy blame on General Porter's actions. Owing largely to Porter's loyalty to ousted AOP commander George B. McClellan, Porter was court-martialed in November 1862. He spent the next 16 years trying clear his name and record, which he finally did in 1878. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
