| Birth: | unknown Alnwick, England | | Death: | Jun. 24, 1219 Rochester, England | Bishop of Rochester and Lord Chief Justice of England. He was a prominent opponent of King John. His first ecclesiastical appointment was as archdeacon of Liseaux, Normandy. He was elected bishop of Rochester in 1185, but could not be consecrated until he had first been ordained as a priest. He took a prominent part in the coronation of King Richard I in 1189, and acted as a lord justice in the same year. When prince John attempted to seize the crown in 1193, he joined the Archbishop of Canterbury in pronouncing a sentence of excommunication against him. He and the other Bishops then took control of the castles of Lancaster and Nottingham for the king. In 1194 he founded a hospital for poor travellers at Strood, near Rochester, Kent. He was unpopular with the monks of Rochester. This was because he supported Henry II in his dispute with the Pope over the issue of the royal prerogative. On his death the monks buried him without the usual full ceremony. (bio by: js)
