Birth: Jul. 9, 1807, France
Death: Nov. 21, 1885
Elk County
Pennsylvania, USA

Note that his full name was Jean Philippe Lesser, however, he consistantly used "Philip Lesser" for documents and his family probably used "Philip Lesser" for his headstone.

He was the son of Anna Marie Walter and Lorentz Lesser (1762-1836).

Jean Philippe Lesser [Philip Lesser] was born in Sundhausen, Alsace-Lorraine, France, July 9, 1807; died of injuries received on a railroad crossing in Ridgway, Elk County, Pennsylvania, November 21, 1885; buried at Oakland Cemetery, Warren, PA, November 23, 1885.

He married in Sundhausen, Alsace-Lorraine (Bas-Rhin), France, November 23, 1828, Marie Madeline Fehlmann, daughter of Marie Madeline Gutzler and Andreas Fehlmann.
Marie was born May 11, 1805; died in Warren, PA, April 20, 1877; buried at Oakland Cemetery, Warren, PA, April 23, 1877.

Jean Philippe is listed as a weaver in Sundhausen on his marriage record in 1828 and his daughter's death record in 1832. Philip is listed as Philippe Lesser, age 28, weaver, Sundhausen, at the birth of his son Philippe in 1836.

Philip and his family immigrated to Warren, PA, in 1838. He followed the vocation of farming.

Philip is listed in the 1860 Census in Conewango, Warren Co., PA, as Phillip Lasser, 52, farmer, real estate 800, personal 400, with wife Magdalena, 52, and children Phillip, 24; Lawrence, 22; Matthias, 19; Mary, 17; and John, 9.

Philip is listed in the 1870 Census in Warren Borough, Warren Co., PA, as Philip Lasser, 62, carpenter, real estate 2500, personal 200.

Philip is listed in the 1880 Census in Ridgway, PA, in the household of his son Matthias, as Phillip Lesser, 73.
He was living with his sons, Philip (II) and Matthias, in Ridgway, PA, at his death.

Nice to find out that many of the family stories I heard as a child as in fact true. Nice to find other Lesser descendents...since both my parents were only children, I grew up with no first cousins, aunts or uncles.
