Corp. Barna died in the train crash that took the lives of 33 members of the 109th. Field Artillery.

A Pennsylvania Railroad train carrying the 109th Field Artillery Battalion on Sept. 11, 1950, was involved in a fatal railroad accident. Thirty-three local men died in the wreck near Coshocton, Ohio, when a famous westbound streamliner, the Spirit of St. Louis, running through stop signals, came out of a morning fog and slammed into the rear of the troop train.
