Velasco, Gilbert J.
VELASCO, Gilbert J. age 93, a resident of New Lebanon, Ohio, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 11, 2009. He was a native of Phoenix, Arizona until 1996 when he made Ohio his home. Gilbert was employed by Reynolds Aluminum for 25 years. After 19 years with the Arizona State Capitol Police he retired in September 1996. He was also Lieutenant with the Arizona Highway Patrol as a reserve officer for 25 years. He was patrol escort for the Don's Travelcades throughout the southwest for 20 years. He was advisor to the Patrol Explorer Scouts. He also would sometimes escort celebrities one of which was Billy Graham. He was a member of the Coalition of Dept. of Public Safety Retirees. While wintering in Arizona he attended the Calvary Community Church and is a faithful member of the Brookville Grace Brethren Church in Brookville, Ohio. Gilbert Velasco was born on April 15, 1915, in Phoenix, Arizona the son of Jesus and Rita (Diaz) Velasco. He first married Oralia Hugez, who died. He then married Gerry Gagle. Survivors include: His loving wife: Gerry Gagle - New Lebanon, Ohio; daughters: Janet Velasco - Queen Creek, Arizona, Arminda Armenta - Parks, Arizona; 2 sons: Michael Velasco - Phoenix, Arizona, George Velasco - Phoenix, Arizona; 2 brothers: Baldemar Velasco - Tucson, Arizona, Lionel Velasco - Los Angeles, California; 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; Many friends in Ohio and Arizona including special friends Craig and Sandy Cobaugh. He was preceded in death by one son, Gilbert Velasco, Jr.; his first wife who was the mother of his children, Oralia Huguez; one sister, Mary Fulton and one brother, Joe Velasco. There will be two services held for Gilbert Velasco. The first service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Brookville Grace Brethren Church in Brookville, Ohio. The second service will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home in Portland, Indiana. Reverend Henry Mallon will officiate and burial will follow in the Green Park Cemetery in Portland, Indiana. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1-2 p.m. in the Brookville Grace Brethren Church in Brookville, Ohio. There will also be visitation on Sunday from 12-2 p.m. in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home in Portland, Indiana.
