Born William Russell Craft, he played at the defensive back and half back positions for nine seasons (1946 to 1954) in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a member and key player on two NFL championship teams (1948 and 1949 Eagles). He achieved Pro Bowl status two-times (1951 and 1952). On September 24, 1950, Craft while with the Eagles tied an NFL record when he intercepted four passes in a game against the Chicago Cardinals. He currently holds the Eagles' team record of four interceptions in one game. During his collegiate years at the University of Alabama, he was a standout player gifted with great speed. He was chosen by the Eagles in the 15th round of the 1943 NFL Draft. He appeared in 100 career regular season games and recorded 22 interceptions for 451 yards with 2 touchdowns.
