|Death: ||Feb. 28, 1707|
Robert Coates immigrated with his parents (unknown) from England, settling in Lynn, Mass. He married JANE SUMNER in 1657 in Ipswich, Essex Co., Mass.
They were the parents of at least five children. Three of the Coates daughters, Joane (Jane), Elizabeth and my ancestor, ABIGAIL, all married Rhodes brothers.
Robert & wife, Jane, petitioned the Essex co. Court in 1691 for administration of the estate of Thomas Sumner, Jane's brother since Jane was his only living heir.
At a Lynn town meeting held 1657, he was appointed part of a committee to defend the inhabitant's rights to Nahant (Lynn) for the benefit of the people.
He took the Oath of Allegience to the king in 1678 along with his son, Robert, Jr., and Joan Coates.
