Text: ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE -- HOWARD DODGE, WHILE IN A DEMENTED CONDITION, SHOOTS F.E.GRIFFITH AND COMMITS SUICIDE --The town was thrown into a furor of excitement last Friday noon by the report t hat Howard Dodge had shot F.E.Griffith and then turned the gun upon himself, ending his own life. The deed was committed a few minutes after noon and occurred on the main street of the town. The re aders of the MAIL know of the trouble between Griffith and Dodge. Last winter Griffith made some kind of agreement with Dodge to sell Dodge's farm at public auction. This Griffith did, but while th e bidding was going on Dodge decided to place a bid on the farm himself, which was not raised by any of the bidders, and Dodge kept the farm. Griffith then brought action to recover commission, cla iming that he had fulfilled his part of the agreement, and the court last week, Tuesday, gave him a judgement against Dodge for $500.00. Dodge had been in very poor health for more than two years an d the trouble with Griffith appeared to make him worse. He said to different parties he would get even with Griffith and two witnesses, L. F. Meyers and J. M. Day, but no one thought much of the thre at. Dodge was sick in bed all day Thursday and did not get up until Friday just before noon, when his little boy came home and told of having heard Griffith talking about the case. This appeared t o make Dodge frantic and he took a revolver and Remington automatic shot gun and started up town. The day was stormy and not many people were on the street. Dodge came up the middle of the street un til he reached Griffith's office. He then stepped to the sidewalk and looked through the glass door and saw Griffith sitting at his desk reading. Dodge raised the shotgun and fired twice, in rapid s uccession. The first charge was defected and scattered somewhat by passing through the glass at an angle and this appears to be the charge that hit Griffith. The second charge lodged in the back o f the desk. Dodge stood still for a moment listening then started back towards home, but when he reached the corner a half block south he turned west. When about opposite the side door of the Kesse y shop, he stopped suddenly, placed the butt of the gun on the ground and placing his shin over the muzzle pulled the trigger. The shot did not take effect, owing to his leaning too far to one side . A second shot however was effective, tearing away the left side of the head. The body was taken care of by Undertaker Von Heusen, by order of Justice Herbster, the coroner deeming an inquest unnec essary. Griffith was taken at once to the Milford Hospital, where Drs. Feller and Coldren dressed the wounds. It was found that he left wrist was shattered and the right arm, just below the shoulde r badly mangled, besides many other places above the waist that appeared to be dangerous. Griffith is now resting easy and will undoubtedly recover.
Dodge is to be pitied moe than blamed, as his act was clearly the act of a demented man. His ill health had undermined his constitution and reason until he was unaccountable for his rash act . The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church and interment was made in Okoboji cemetery.
