Houston Native Dies at Leland
The Rev. Hugh Guyton Collins, 65, a retired Baptist Minister and teacher, who was a brother to Mrs. Alonzo Skelton of Mantee, died Thursday at the home of his brother, John Collins, at Ridgeland after suffering a heart attack.
Services were held Saturday from Leland First Baptist Church with burial in the Houston Cemetery here.
Rev. Collins was a native of Houston. His father, Hubert M Collins, was a well known Baptist minister in northeast Mississippi and his mother was the former Annie Atkinson. He attended Chickasaw county schools and graduated from Mississippi College.
He recently returned to Leland to make his home, after retiring in May. In addition to his ministry, he taught in the public schools for 16 years in communities where he held pastorates. He was a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lola Vanhorn Collins; two sons, Felix of Clinton and Charles A of Leland; two daughters, Mrs. Dwight Young of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Mrs. David Young of Jefferson City, Tennessee; one brother, John Collins of Ridgeland; and one sister, Mrs. Alonzo Skelton of Mantee.
