Jacob was the seventh child of Martin and Martha (Fuller) Miller of Laurens County, SC. He was the father of eight children which are: James, William J, Martha Ida, Jones F., Celia T, John Chancey, Hester A. and Louisa Miller. He moved to the Stony Point area of old Abbeville District before 1840. On 1 Aug. 1863 He enlisted for six months in the Confederate Army. His service was as a Pvt. in Co. F, 1st SC State Troops. He received a medical discharge on 12 Oct. 1863, and was described as being 5 ft, 8 in. tall, grey eyes, with dark hair and complexion. Afterwards Jacob became a hotel keeper and the superintendent of the county "poor house".
