Soren Madsen Meyer, 83, Sioux Falls, passed away Christmas Day 2008, at Prince of Peace.

Soren was born Feb. 8, 1925, at home in Lake Benton, MN. He was the youngest of Peter and Mary (Christensen) Meyer's three children. After their mother died, the young Meyer children went to live with Peter's brother and sister, Hans and Annie Meyer, on Hans' farm near Lake Benton. Soren attended country school until graduating from the eighth grade, at which time he worked on his uncle's farm full-time until the end of World War II. He then moved to Sioux Falls, where he was employed at General Mills and where he soon met Florence Zimmermann. Soren and Florence were married Dec. 12, 1948. Soren then worked as a route driver for Coca Cola before becoming a mail carrier with the U.S Postal Service.

Soren always made time for his family, whether it was teaching his son to hunt or taking the entire family camping when the children were young. Family fishing and hunting trips were a seasonal constant throughout Soren's life. He became a skilled carpenter when, with the help of his father Pete, he built the family home from a basement house he and Florence had purchased on the east side of Sioux Falls . Soren continued to pursue his interest in woodworking with a steady stream of wooden objects and furniture turned out of his garage. Soren was also a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Twins from their inception in the early sixties. All these passions and pleasures, though, paled in comparison to the joy he felt in the company of his family, and he and Florence spent every holiday in the company of children, grandchildren, and later great-grandchildren. While Florence baked cookies, Soren built or repaired toys, and they both spoiled their grandchildren at every opportunity.

Soren is survived by his son, Bob Meyer (Joan Giebink) of Sioux Falls, daughter, Sandy Stoakes (Mike) of Hartford, son-in-law, John Jones of Seattle, grandchildren: Jason Stoakes (Dawn); Zac, Regan, and Seth Meyer; Derik, Kurt, and Alex Jones; great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Ben, and Jake Stoakes; sisters-in-law Darlene Meyer, Lulu Anderson, Doris Wick, and Norma Feller, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Soren was preceded in death by his wife Florence, his daughter Connie Jones, his sister Thelma Showalter, and his brother Stan Meyer.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 Tuesday evening, Dec. 30, at Miller Funeral Home on Main Ave with family present from 5 to 7. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. The family will be present to greet friends a half hour prior to service time, beginning at 1:30 pm. Private burial services will be at a later time.
