|Birth: ||Mar. 11, 1857|
|Death: ||Feb. 23, 1939|
Born to his father's second marriage, James was the son of John PAYNE, Jr., and Priscilla NIXON.
James was six years old when his father died as a result of having been shot on the steps on the court house in Danville. He was eight years old when his mother died.
After his mother died, he and his younger sister (Harriet) moved in with their older paternal half-brother Alonzo PAYNE and Alonzo's wife, Rhoda (GREEN).
James married Hettie O. WARNER on January 1, 1877, probably in Vermilion County, Illinois. He was just short of 20 years old when he married.
James was an insurance agent with his own business in Vermilion County, Illinois. His policy was to be absolutely honest with customers because it was good business. His logic was that treating people honestly and fairly would result in repeat business, and his business practices worked well.
