James Graves Condon, the 24-year-old son of singer Marguerite Piazza, was found dead in his apartment at the Bellevue Tower shortly after noon yesterday, police said. Police tentatively ruled the death a suicide pending a ruling by the medical examiner's office. Condon, who lived at 305 South Bellevue, Apt. 506, was reported last seen Saturday evening. Police said they were called to the two-bedroom apartment at 12:15 p.m. by Dr. McCarthy DeMere. Police said a girl friend of Condon's went by his apartment about noon and found him dead. She then went to Miss Piazza's home at 1720 Central, and Miss Piazza telephoned Dr. DeMere. He telephoned police and met them at the apartment. Police said Condon was found sitting braced against a wall in a bedroom with a 12-gauge shotgun under his right leg. Officers said it appeared he had been shot once in the mouth with the shotgun. The shooting probably took place Sunday night, but they were unable to fix a more definite time, police said. Harry Bergtholdt, Miss Piazza's husband, met police at the apartment and said Condon had been under psyciatric treatment but he did not know whether he had seen his psychiatrist since February or March. Condon was currently enrolled at the Memphis Academy of Arts. He had previously attended the Museum Art School in Porland, Ore., and Memphis State University. He also attended Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tenn., and Lawrenceville in Princton, N.J., where he was captain of the fencing team. He graduated from Memphis University School. In addition to his mother and stepfather, Condon leaves two brothers, Gregory Condon and William J. Condon, Jr., and three sisters, Miss Shirley Condon, Miss Marguerite Condon, and Miss Anna Becky Condon, all of Memphis. Treadwell-Norris Funeral Home has charge.
