Son of Thomas Campbell and Susan Bradshaw Campbell. He was born in Edgar Co, Illinois and the family moved to Piatt Co, Illinois before 1860. James was married to Rebecca Fehrmann on 8 Oct 1857 in McLean Co, IL and he farmed and was a blacksmith in Piatt Co, IL.
They had 2 children, William Thomas and Mary Susan.
James enlisted in the US Army on 4 Aug 1862 at Sidney, IL. He was mustered in on 3 Sept 1862 at Danville, IL. He was a Pvt in Co E, 125 Il, US Inf. James was killed in action on 19 Mar 1865 at Bentonville, North Carolina.
