Harness horse owner and racer Wayne Vance, of Peoria Heights, who raced them throughout the Midwest, was found dead in his trailer at the State Fair Grounds in Springfield, IL at 6:30 May 27, 1972.
He raced horses at county and state fairs and pari-mutuel tracks. He was in Springfield in connection with his racing activities at the time of his death.
Mr. Vance also was a hog buyer associated with H.L. Sparks & Co. of St. Louis and operated stockyards for that firm in Barry (Pike Co.) and East Peoria. He also was a hog buyer in Bushnell, retiring in 1948. He was a charter member of the Moose Lodge at Macomb.
A resident of Peoria since 1942, he was born in Brooklyn, IL, a son of Otis and Hattie Curtis Vance. He first married Maude Alexander, who lives in Macomb.
On Oct. 25, 1958, he married Maureen Bernhill Orr at Springfield and she survives along with one son, George W. of Boulder, CO; two grandchildren; a brother, Gale of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Price of Glendale, AZ, and Miss Twila Vance of Macomb; and one nephew.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cumerford-Endsley Memorial Home, 203 NE Perry, the Rev. Ernest L. Fernandes officiating.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Oakwood Cemetery at Macomb, the Rev. Jack Travelstead, pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church, Macomb, officiated.
