NEGRO CAUGHT AT TALL TIMBER ON WEDNESDAY
Accused of Killing Aged Little River Man On Last Saturday
Deputy Sheriff W.M. Enterkin and Town Marshal W.H. Bishon early Wednesday morning apprehended Harvey Hammett, 35 years old negro, in the Tall Timber quarters and lodged him in jail in connection with the death of George Thurmon, aged resident of the Little River section south of Jena.
Mr. Thurman was killed about 6:30 last Saturday night near his home as he attempted to cross the highway. He had been out to milk his cows in his lot across the highway and was returning to the house with a pail of milk when an automobile said to have been driven by Hammett struck him and killed him almost instantly.
Officers from the sheriff's department learned that the car belonged to Hammett, who is said to have sped away from the accident. They secured the car in the Good Pine quarters Saturday night, but Hammett has been in hiding since the accident occurred. He is said to have readily admitted the crime and will be held in the parish jail until the grand jury meets on a charge of manslaughter.
Mr. Thurman had been a resident of this section for many years and his friends throughout LaSalle parish learned of the accident with considerable regret.
The car, now benig [sic] held at the sheriff's office, is splattered with milk and blood.
