ABINGDON -- Stanley E. "Stub" Lewis, 77, of 403 S. Jefferson St. died at 3:26 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

Born Aug. 31, 1920, in Abingdon to Emery L. and Anna M. Jones Lewis, he married Eva L. House on Dec. 3, 1938, in Burlington, Iowa. She died Nov. 5, 1980. He also was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia Hunt and Donna Quinn, one granddaughter, one brother and two sisters.

Surviving are two sons, Herbert of rural Alexis and Lonnie of rural St. Augustine; two daughters, Connie Brown and Kathie Cecil, both of Abingdon; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a friend, Clara Tabb, who shared his home.

He worked at Briggs Manufacturing, retiring in 1982. He was a member of Machinist Union 2079. A World War II Navy Air Corps veteran, he was an airplane mechanic. He was a 50-year member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381 and its firing squad. He was a member of Abingdon Christian Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery, with military rites by his American Legion Post.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381 firing squad.
