Historian. He studied at Christ Church College, Oxford, and was professor of modern history at Kings College, London, from 1871 until 1885. He was a descendant of Oliver Cromwell, and was a noted writer about the puritan England. His books include, "History of England from the Accession of James I to the Outbreak of the Civil War, 1603 to 1642" (10 vols., 1863 to 1882), "History of the Civil War, 1642 to 1649" (3 vols., 1886 to 1891), and "History of the Commonwealth and Protectorate, 1649 to 1660" (3 vols., 1895 to 1901). He also published a biography of Oliver Cromwell (1901). He was respected in his lifetime for his thorough use of manuscript sources, and was given honorary degrees from Oxford, Edinburgh, and Göttingen Universities.
