Actor. In a career that spanned over six decades, he was a memorable character peformer in motion pictures, television and theatre. Born Martin Patterson Hingle in Denver, Colorado, he was educated at the University of Texas and served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he moved to New York City and studied acting at the American Theatre Wing. He made his Broadway debut in the production "End as a Man" (1953 to 1954) and made his big screen debut with a bit part in the classic 1954 Elia Kazan picture "On the Waterfront". Beginning in the early years of television, Hingle accumulated countless credits on such programs as "The Philco Television Playhouse", "Studio One", "The Twilight Zone", "The Fugitive", "Gunsmoke", "Mission: Impossible" and "The Streets of San Francisco", as well as many others. He received a Tony Award nomination for his performance in the drama "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs" (1957 to 1959), and had further stage credits with "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (1955 to 1956), "J.B." (1958 to 1959), "The Glass Menagerie" (1965), "A Life" (1980 to 1981) and "1776" (1997 to 1998). Among his other many film credits are "Splendor in the Grass" (1961), "All the Way Home" (1963), "Hang 'Em High" (1968), "The Gauntlet" (1977), "Norma Rae" (1979), "Sudden Impact" (1983) and "Brewster's Millions" (1985). He is best known to many for his role as 'Commissioner Gordon' in the "Batman" film series. He continued to appear in films up until his death from cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
