Tombstone located in Tinnin cemetery with inscribed name as James W. Westbrooks and dates as indicated. Given name was James William. Born in MS. Married Nancy E. Gatlin. Children born in TX., were Wellington, b. Jan 1861; Ada, b. 12 May 1862; Lannie, b. 22 May 1872; Thomas Allen, b. 11 Jan 1874, (who married Thomas Missouri Thompson); Mary I., b. 24 Sep 1876, (who married Frank Cooper); Willie, b. 6 Jan 1878; James W., b. 4 Dec 1880, (who married Lucinda C. Saffell); & Roland, b. 2 Mar 1885. *Mrs. Nancy E. Westbrook received a Texas Confederate Pension #17997 for service of her husband James Walker Westbrook in the Confederate Army. An abstract of the pension shows: applied 4 Oct 1909, approved 28 Feb 1910, lived in Powderly, he died 24 May 1906 (sic) in Lamar Co., they married 27 Apr 1858 in Goodwater, Indian Territory, her age was 68, born in AR, lived 50 years in Powderly. War Dept. Reply, 21 Feb 1910, Private, Co. I, 34th Texas Cavalry, enlisted 3 Mar 1862, last roll 29 Feb 1864, nothing stated as to his presence or absence. A. F. Merrill, 78, Pecan Gap, Delta Co., 16 Nov 1909, deposed they enlisted in Fannin Co., and he served in the same regiment. G. W. Fry, 74, Ladonia, 16 Nov 1909, deposed he served in the same regiment. *J. W. Westbrooks, Pvt., Co. I, 34th Texas Cavalry, is listed in the book TEXAS CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS 1861 - 1865 UNIT ROSTER, Vol. II, edited by Janet B. Hewitt, (Wilmington, NC: Broadfoot Publishing Co., 1997), p. 225-229.
