Olympic Athletic. He was the first swimmer to break the 17-minute barrier for 1,500 meters and at the University of Southern California, he won nine NCAA individual championships. In the 1963 Pan-American Games, he won gold medals in the 400-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle races. At the 1964 Olympic Tokyo Games, he won the gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle relay and a silver medal in the 400 individual medley. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1976 and the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame in 1982.
