Mrs. A. H. Smith Dead.
After lingering illness she passed away Friday night. Mrs. Emeline Blitch Smith, wife of Judge A. H. Smith, died at the family home on Patterson Street Friday night about ten o'clock. She had been ill with typhoid fever for six or seven weeks, but there was hope for her recovery before other complications set in. She continued to decline then, despite the skill of physicians and the ministrations of devoted ones, until the hand of the Great Physician was laid upon her. Though her sufferings were intense during her illness, she bore them with the patience and fortitude that characterized her in the long and sublime life which she lived. Mrs. Smith was born in Bryan County, about sixty-six years ago, and was Miss Emeline Blitch until 15 her marriage to Capt. A. H. Smith about forty-five years ago. With him she came to Valdosta in the early days of the town's history, and she has resided here since then, witnessing every phase of the city's development and being well-known and beloved by those who have come in and gone out of the town during the last quarter of a century. Mrs. Smith was an excellent woman, charitable in disposition and kind to all. She was devoted to her home and spent the greater part of her time in making home attractive. She was a Christian woman, living daily in imitation of the example of her Master, and now that her work on earth is ended, she hears this summons: "Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you." The funeral services were conducted at the cemetery Saturday afternoon by Rev. J. W. Domingos, assisted by Rev. C. C. Carson. After tributes to the deceased, the casket was consigned to the grave and the large concourse of friends and relatives turned sorrowfully away. Mrs. Smith leaves two daughters, Mrs. Henry Briggs and Mrs. Aleph Rockwell, besides a devoted husband to mourn her death. The sympathy of the entire communty is with these bereaved ones, and especially with him to whom she had been the dearest companion for so many years.
