Sir James Knowles
Birth: 1831
Death: Feb. 13, 1908
East Sussex, England

Architect, Editor and Founder of the Metaphysical Society. He studied Architecture at University College, London, and also in Italy. His buildings include three London churches, Albert mansions in Westminster and Aldworth house, the home of Alfred Lord Tennyson. He became firm friends with Tennyson, and refused payment for the work. He assisted Tennyson with business matters and designed scenery for Henry Irving's production of "The Cup". In 1869 he founded the Metaphysical Society with the aim of promoting debate between leading religious and scientific figures. Tennyson, Dean Stanley and Ruskin were among the society's members. The club met regularly for eleven years, and closed in May 1880. Between 1870 and 1877 he was editor of the "Contemporary review", and later set up his own publication, the "Nineteenth Century". This magazine successfully campaigned to halt the construction of the channel tunnel in 1882. He was knighted in 1904. (bio by: js)
