Identified on the battlefield as Timothy Conner of Co B 20th Illinois. Entered into book of interments as William Connell of the 35th New Jersey, 4th Division 16th Army Corps. In VA grave locator as William Connell.

Timothy Conner, Sergt Martin Mohrle (Morely), and Corp Russel Cowdey, all of the 20th Illinois, were buried next to each other on the battlefield. There was a problem when they were re-interred in Marietta National Cemetery and Conner became Connell and Mohrle was buried as Unknown. Only Russell Gowdey was correctly identified and given a stone with his name on it.
