Barbara Edna (Baldwin) Branigan
1916 - 2008
Barbara Edna Branigan, 92, a resident of the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone since 2006, formerly of Pocahontas, Iowa, died on Monday, December 15, 2008 at the Boone County Hospital in Boone.
Barbara was born on June 26, 1916 in Penalosa, Kansas, the daughter of Edna Pearl and Lee Samuel Baldwin. Her growing up years were spent in Kingman and Maxwell, Kansas.
She attended Phillips College at Enid, Oklahoma for three years and continued her education at the Emporia State Teacher's College in Emporia, Kansas, where she got her teaching degree.
She taught country school for a year and a half near Kingman. The county agent talked her into teaching first grade in Kingman, which she did the next five and a half years.
With the coming of World War II, she trained to be an Army Nurse Aide in Wichita, Kansas. She was stationed at McClosky Hospital in Temple, Texas. It was here she met Vincent Branigan, a patient at McClosky. Although she didn't see much of him at the hospital (he was never in his room!), they began corresponding after Vincent left the hospital.
Barb and Vince were married in 1953. They had one daughter, Kathy. They farmed near Pocahontas and continued their farming operations there, even after moving to an acreage near Boone in 1979. In 2006 they moved to the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Strohl and her husband John of Madrid, Iowa; her brother, Floyd Baldwin and his wife Betty of Monroe, Washington; her sister-in-law, Benita Lowry of
Las Vegas, NV and her four nieces, three nephews and numerous relatives and friends.
