History of Floyd County 1917

August Huxsol, one of the painstaking and successful general farmers of St. Charles Township, Floyd County, was born on October 14, 1846. He is a son of Conrad & Caroline (Kufuss) Huxsol, both natives of Germany, where they grew up, married and established their home, living there until 1876, when they came to America, locating in Charles City, Iowa, where they spent the rest of their lives in retirement. The father followed farming in the old country. His family consisted of twelve children.

August Huxsol was reared in Germany and there he attended the common schools. In 1871 he immigrated to Charles City, Iowa. He landed in this country without capital, in fact, owed thirty dollars when he reached New York, but he has worked hard and managed well, forgoing to the front through his own efforts, until he has become one of the substantial men of his township, now owning a fine farm of three hundred and twenty acres,m which is under a high state of improvement and cultivation. He hired out as a farm hand when he first came to Floyd county, continuing thus for three years; then, having saved his wages, he bought eighty acres in St. Charles township, later adding to his original holdings, as he prospered. Among the modern improvements that he has made on his place was the laying of eighteen hundred dollars worth of tiling. He has a good home and numerous convenient out buildings. He keeps his farm well stocked, is also a stockholder in the Farmers' Elevator Company, which owns and operates the elevator at Oakwood, which he helped to organize. He has been treasurer of the company since its organization. He has been schoold director of his district several times.

Mr. Huxsol was married in 1876 to Elizabeth Keller, a native of Ohio and daughter of George & Margaret (Yager) Keller, both natives of Germany.

To August & Elizabeth Huxsol twelve children have been born, all living at this writing, namely: Bertha, Emma, Alfred, Emily, Ida, Edward, Lucy, Viola, Julius, Nellie, Elmer & Emil.
