He coined the term "wind chill" and co-developed the wind chill factor. A protege of explorer Richard E. Byrd, he was a member of the first three United States Antarctic expeditions (between 1928 and 1941) and for most of his career worked in the United States Army Scientific Office. He helped develop cold weather gear used by the Army during the Korean War and served as the leader of the United States South Pole Station in 1956 and 1957. He also served as the first United States scientific attache to Australia and New Zealand from 1963 to 1966. Siple Island in Antarctica is named for him.
