Al Zarifis, 78, of Creston joined his Lord and Saviour Thursday, December 25, 2008 at his home.
Alexander "Al" Peter Zarifis, son of Peter John Zarifis and Harriett Griffith (Rosser) Zarifis, was born November 27, 1930. After graduating in 1949 from East High School in Waterloo, Iowa, he served for two years in the Naval Reserve on the USS Iowa. He graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, IA. On August 16, 1955, Al was united in marriage to Phyllis Johnson at the Greek Orthodox Church in Waterloo, IA. They started their life together in Keota, IA.
Al and Phyllis moved to Creston in 1956 where he taught at Creston High School for a year. In 1957, Al opened Zarifis Agency. He operated it until his retirement in 1999. He was the Chairman of Union County American Red Cross for 35 years, a City Councilman, a member of the First Baptist Church in Creston, and a member of Gideons International.
After retirement Al enjoyed golfing, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was also actively involved in jail ministry and the reading buddy program at Creston Elementary School.
Al is survived by his wife, Phyllis; four sons, Clark (Barbara) Zarifis of Iowa City, Michael (Kelli) Zarifis of Carl Junction, MO, Kenneth (Isa) Zarifis of Austin, TX, and Thomas Zarifis of LeGrand, one daughter, Anne Marie (Dan) Chapman of Creston; two brothers: James (Jean) Zarifis of Waterloo, and Frank (Ann) Zarifis of Cedar Rapids, and ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Al was preceded in death by his parents and brother Donald.
