He played halfback for the University of California from 1936 to 1938. He was captain of the team in 1937, the year Cal won the national football championship with a 10-0-1 record. He was a consensus All-American in 1938 and was voted the Most Valuable Player in the 1938 Rose Bowl. He was fifth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy that year. He was a starting halfback in the 1939 College All-Star game that played the NFL champion New York Giants in Chicago. He turned down a $4,000 offer from the NFL's Brooklyn Dodgers to play professionally. He was inducted into the National College Football Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1994.
