|Death: ||Mar., 1881|
John F. Farmer is the son of Barnard Farmer and Mary "Molly" Carr/Farmer. In 1823, he married Elizabeth E. Martin, the eldest daughter of Thomas and Drucilla Martin. John F. established the Farmer family in Weakley County, Tennessee in about 1838. By tracing land deed records we are able to determine they migrated from Halifax County, Virginia in about 1838. John and Elizabeth previously owned property on Runaway Creek in Halifax County, Virginia. We know they sold the property in Halifax in December 1837. We also know he purchased property in Weakley County, Tennessee in October 1838, thus bounding the time frame of their where-abouts.
John was a farmer and landowner in the 7th Civil District of Weakley County. Tax records show he owned from 200 to 260 acres. The available tax records covered from 1842 through 1869. His principle crop was tobacco. Many tobacco farmers of Virginia came to Tennessee about that time in history because the tobacco crop was failing in Virginia. Cheap land in Tennessee provided a new opportunity to continue farming the way they understood. Weakley County, located in West Tennessee and near the Mississippi River, provided tobacco farmers the opportunity to conveniently ship their product by boat to New Orleans for sale.
The seven children of John F. and Elizabeth Farmer were: John B. (1830-1912), Richard P., known as "Rick", (1830-1912), Beverly A., known as "Bell" (1832-1861), Thomas Martin (1837-1870), Albert M. (1839-1862), William "Will" Henry (1842-1884), and Martha, the only daughter, (1845-1862).
Note: John's tombstone has been lost or destroyed. It is believed he is buried next to his wife Elizabeth. Weakley County Deed Book V, page 294, dated 4 Aug 1871, supports this belief. It states "Wm H & John B Farmer further agrees and binds themselves that at the death of said John F (they will) properly and decently bury him by the side of his deceased wife our mother".
