Private, November Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment based in Petawawa, Ontario. Aged 28, he was from Peterborough, ON. He was deployed with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
He was killed, and three soldiers injured, after a roadside bomb detonated near their armoured vehicle during a security patrol in the Zhari District approximately 24 kilometres west of Kandahar City.
Pte Freeman was on his first tour of duty in Afghanistan and had returned on Dec. 13 from a three week home leave. On Christmas Day, he and his comrades at a forward operating base were surprised by a visit from Brig.-Gen. Denis Thompson, the commander of coalition forces in Kandahar province, who served them a turkey dinner.
Pte Freeman spent his childhood and teenage years as an air cadet with the 534 Peterborough Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron. He joined the Canadian Forces in the summer of 2005. Michael was remembered as a dedicated professional soldier and dependable driver. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing, camping, paintball and scuba. He is survived by his parents Mark and Gail, sister Kelly, grandparents, girlfriend Brandy and extended family.
Funeral service held on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at Calvary Pentecostal Church in Peterborough.
A total of 104 soldiers and one diplomat have died since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
