Judith Ellen was the daughter of Moses Mordecai, II, a Raleigh attorney and judge, and his wife Margaret "Peggy" Lane. She was called ELLEN by the family. She married her cousin, Samuel Fox Mordecai, son of Solomon and Caroline "Waller" Mordecai on Feb. 04, 1850. They were the parents of two children; a daughter, Margaret Lane, called "Mag", and a son, Samuel Fox, Jr., who was born almost four months after his father's untimely death on Aug. 22, 1852.
Her home, Mordecai House, was built as a small plantation home in 1785 before Raleigh was established as the State Capital. The house was enlarged to its present size in 1826 and served as the manor house for a sizeable plantation.
As a young child, she saw her home enlarged to its present size and the death of her father when she was only four years old. Her mother had died after the birth of her brother in 1821 [Jacob "Jac" Mordecai, II]. Her aunts, Tempie and Harriet Lane and step-uncle, George Washington Mordecai raised Ellen in a loving and happy atmosphere.
Ellen was the author of a book about her childhood memories entitled, "Gleanings from Long Ago", which she dictated to her granddaughter, Anne Valleau Morel, when Ellen was 86 years old.
The Ellen Mordecai Garden is located behind the Mordecai House in Raleigh. It was created from first-hand descriptions in her book of the Mordecai kitchen garden of the 1830's. Today, it contains vegetables, herbs, and flowers grown in the mid-19th century and they are arranged in squares of raised beds.
Ellen died at the residence of her son, Samuel Fox Mordecai, Jr., on the Trinity College Campus, Durham, NC, on Saturday night at 10:30, 26 Feb 1916, aged 96 years. The funeral was from Christ Church, Raleigh, NC, on 28 Feb 1916. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, NC.
Her wit, humor, kindness and her charm made her a beloved figure to all she came in contact with, young and old.
