From a Column by Masie Underwood, BARTOW NEIGHBOR newspaper, Nov. 2004:
Last week I lost a dear friend. Patrick Bolan, who had served as the sports editor of the Bartow NEIGHBOR since the publication began in the 1980's, died of a heart attack at his home in Marietta November 20, 2004. I worked with him for the ten years that I was the Neighbor editor and over the years he and I became good friends.
Patrick was indeed a unique man with a vast knowledge and love of sports, and his knowledge of math was uncanny. He loved red cars and cats, and was a great friend who would do anything for you when you needed him. I will never forget when he drove me to Atlanta in the middle of the night when my daughter was about to have her son and my husband was out of town. Patrick waited all night with me and drove me home when they finally decided it was a false alarm.
Patrick also had a great dry wit. Once, when on of the downtown Cartersville festivals was about to take place, I told him that I was so excited because my two daughters and their children were coming up to the festival the next day. I told Patrick that after they enjoyed the festival, our family was going out to one of the local fast food establishments for lunch. Without cracking a smile he said, "You don't support that could be construed as child abuse, do you?"
Patrick also was a devoted son who spent most of his life caring for his mother Carolyn. His father died at an early age leaving her with very young twin girls, Beth Maureen and Bonnie Shannon, whom Patrick also helped raise. He was indeed a very special person, and I feel blessed that he was my friend.
