Son of Lt. Colonel Stephen Burritt, Sr. and Martha (Stevens) Burritt.
Brother of Edmund Burritt Sr., Sarah "Sally" Burritt, Wiliam Augustus Burritt, Stephen Burritt Jr., and Hamilton Burritt.
Father of Henry Burritt, Jr. and Maria Burritt.
Served as a lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment of Grenville Militia during the War of 1812, which was commanded by his father. His uncles Adoniram, Daniel Jr., and Major were also officers in the regiment, as was his own brother Edmund. Post-war, he was promoted to major on 19 October 1815. On 17 April 1830, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and appointed commanding officer of the 2nd Regiment of Grenville Militia and served in this position for the next ten years. In 1846, he was given command of the 1st Regiment of Leeds Militia.
Also active in civil affairs, in 1821 he became a justice of the peace for the Johnstown District.
