MARY HUNSAKER PIONEER, PASSES ON OCTOBER 13
Mary F. (Mathews) Hunsaker was born in Coldwater, Michigan on March 1, 1880. When she was 20 years old she came west and lived the first year with the William Leatons in Lyle, Washington. She taught school one year eight miles out of The Dalles, Oregon. Her mother, Martha Mathews, moved west in 1901 where Mary met Frank Hunsaker. They were married July 2, 1903 in White Salmon. They have three children, Dan M. and George L. Hunsaker and Mary Frances Hill all now residents of White Salmon.
Mrs. Hunsaker passed away Monday, October 13, 1969. She was an active member of the Mt.View Grange for over 60 years and a life member, a member of the White Salmon Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #107, and registration officer for over 25 years for the Fruit Valley Precinct. She was never any happier than when in the car traveling. When she was 88 years old she drove to Florida with her daughter, Frances, and her husband to visit her sister, Martha Meiser. She traveled 8500 miles and enjoyed every minute of it. She broke her hip in November of 1968 and had recovered so she walked in a walker. On Tuesday, before entering the hospital on Thursday, she spent the day in Vancouver with her granddaughter, Ruth Brown and family. She led a full and active life and was always home when her family and friends needed her. Surviving her are two sons: Dan M. and George L. Hunsaker both of White Salmon and a daughter, Mary Frances Hill also of White Salmon; 13 grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral services will be Thursday, October 16th, at Gardner's Funeral Home in White Salmon at 2:30 p.m.. Interment will be at the White Salmon Cemetery. The Rev. Eugene Haynes of the Bethel Congregational Church will officiate.
